AETC Ltd Facility

Sphere of Activity
AETC Limited is a UK-based company that specialises in the manufacture of gaspath components - substantially rotating blades, and stationary nozzle guide vanes for the aerospace and industrial gas turbine industries.

Background
Sub-contract manufacture of gas turbine blades, initially for Armstrong Siddeley Ltd, was commenced in 1947 within Hepworth & Grandage Ltd, a British owned specialist manufacturer of precision components for reciprocating engines.  AETC continued as a subsidiary of Hepworth & Grandage until re-incorporation in 1975.  The company's products were utilised in some of the world's earliest gas turbine engines.

Success generated rapid growth of demand and the customer base, and the gas turbine engine components manufacturing activities were identified as a separate business and relocated to the present site in 1950.

For more than 20 years the company specialised entirely in the machining of compressor blades, turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes from wrought stock in the nickel-based and titanium alloys widely used for these products.

In 1969 a facility for the precision casting of turbine blades and vanes in the higher-technology alloys, then being introduced into European use, was established alongside the main machine shops giving the Company a 'raw materials to finished product' capability which is unique in Europe.  The precision casting business has steadily expanded ever since its commencement and is now the largest contributor to AETC's turnover.

Previously incorporated as AE Turbine Components Ltd the Company was re-incorporated as AETC Ltd in June 1996 following acquisition by PCC.

The Current Position
AETC has established some of the most modern and comprehensive facilities among the world's independent suppliers of hot section airfoil components for gas turbine engines.  A continuous capital investment programme in plant, machinery and new process technology maintains AETC's forefront capability in the manufacture of airfoils.  Today, AETC employs approximately 650 people on three sites collectively covering over 400,000 sq. ft. of space.

Two sites are situated in West Yorkshire adjacent to the Leeds Bradford Airport at Yeadon.  These sites contain the Precision Casting Facility and the Blade Machining Facility. The third site is situated approximately 100 miles further south at Leicester and specialises in the machining and processing of nozzle guide vanes, a substantial part of the Company's machining business.

AETC's range of component manufacturing is unique in the world.  It comprises the ability to precision-cast and machine turbine airfoils in nickel-based alloys, all to 'engine-ready' condition.

The many and complex chemical, mechanical and thermal ancillary processes required by modern gas turbine airfoil components are encompassed within AETC's 'Total Airfoil Capability'.

AETC's precision casting technology and expertise is integrated with the airfoils casting technology of PCC in which PCC is a world leading specialist.

AETC is Europe's largest fully integrated specialist sub-contract source for its products and services to the aero and industrial gas turbine engine manufacturers in the UK and continental Europe.  Engine manufacturers in the much larger North American sector of the market recognise the Company's broad state-of-the-art capabilities in high technology materials and mechanical engineering, in consequence of which AETC's customer base extends throughout the western World, and more recently into Japan.

Fifty percent of the Company's products are directly exported to overseas customers, which numerically form the majority of the customer base.
